An innovative open-source open-hardware wireless communication system, employing a new low-cost approach to designing free-space optical network systems, enabling building-to-building connectivity with a highly collimated infra red light beam at a capacity of 1 Gbps or 10 Gbps at distances up to 150 meters, enabling organic bottom-up growth of high-capacity networks. A Pro version for professional use is already available for order.

Short operation description

Since existing wireless and fibre-based solutions for Internet access are legging behind the users’ needs and industrial-oriented demands in recent years, we have developed KORUZA, Wireless Optical Communication System for Urban Environments.

KORUZA is a license-free free-space optical wireless Internet access system, being 10 times cheaper in comparison with standard fibre-based solutions. Our product presents fibre-like speeds (1 Gbps or 10 Gbps) while being immune to electromagnetic inference, a disadvantage observed in current wireless technologies. KORUZA uses an eye-safe collimated beam of IR-light to securely transmit data point-to-point through air, using two end-to-end units for link establishment.

The project is classified as S4 – Smart cities and communities. KORUZA enables building cost effective next generation networks with ultra-fast connection established between households and businesses in urban environments. As well, the system is suitable for alternative urban infrastructure for internet access in smart cities (e.g. as part of the city lighting infrastructure) and for connectivity in smart transport and logistics (e.g. communication between cranes, trains, etc.). KORUZA stands for telecommunication infrastructure, which responds to all demands of smart environments and will be suitable also for future 5G networks, in which the devices and services will be based on IoT, cloud computing and virtual & augmented reality.

Operation goals

Our goal is to develop and commercialise KORUZA as an affordable wireless optical communication system for last-mile access and upcoming 5G networks as well as a technology ready for integration into other systems (e.g. for underwater communication, quantum communication, city lights connectivity, etc.). With this project we contribute to European digital agenda and enable the development of diverse applications for 5G, that will be supported by KORUZA FSO technology.

Financial support

The investment is co-funded by Republic of Slovenia (20%) and European Union, European Regional Development Fund (80%) in the total amount of 35.000 euros. www.eu-skladi.si

Izdelava študije izvedljivosti je sofinancirana preko javnega razpisa »DOPOLNJEVANJE SME INSTRUMENTA - Faza 1«

Kratek opis operacije

Ker obstoječe brezžične in optične rešitve za dostopanje do spleta v zadnjih letih zaostajajo za industrijskim povpraševanjem in ne sledijo potrebam uporabnikov, smo razvili KORUZO, Brezžični optični sistem za urbana območja (KORUZA Wireless Optical Communication System for Urban Environments).

KORUZA je prosto-zračni optični brezžični sistem za dostop do interneta, ki je 10-krat cenejši od standardnih optičnih rešitev in za namestitev katerega niso potrebna posebna dovoljenja in licence. Omogoča visoke hitrosti prenosa podatkov – 1 Gbps in 10 Gbps – istočasno pa je imun na elektromagnetno interferenco, kar sicer predstavlja veliko slabost in omejitev obstoječih brezžičnih radijskih tehnologij. KORUZA omogoča vzpostavitev povezave in varen prenos podatkov po zraku, od točke do točke, med dvema enotama s pomočjo očesu varnega usmerjenega infrardečega svetlobnega žarka.

Projekt se uvršča v prednostno področje S4 – Pametna mesta in skupnosti. S KORUZO lahko že danes gradimo cenovno ugodna omrežja naslednje generacije z vzpostavljanjem ultra-hitrih brezžičnih povezav med gospodinjstvi in podjetji v urbanih okolij. Prav tako je sistem primeren za izgradnjo alternativne urbane infrastrukture za dostopanje do spleta v pametnih mestih (npr. na mestnih svetilkah) in za povezljivost v pametnem transportu in logistiki (npr. za komunikacijo med žerjavi, vlaki itd.). KORUZA predstavlja telekomunikacijsko infrastrukturo, ki odgovarja na vse zahteve sodobnih aplikaciji v pametnih okoljih in bo primeren tudi za gradnjo prihajajočih 5G omrežij, ki bodo odgovarjala na potrebe prihajajočih naprav in storitev, ki bodo temeljile na IoT, računalništvu v oblaku ter virtualni in razširjeni resničnosti.

Namen in cilj operacije

Naš cilj je razviti in komercializirati KORUZO kot cenovno učinkovit brezžični optični sistem za širokopasovno povezavo in prihajajoča 5G omrežja ter kot brezžično optično tehnologijo za integracijo v različne sisteme (npr. za podvodno komunikacijo, kvantna komunikacijo, povezljivost v mestni razsvetljavi, itd.) in s tem prispevati k zasledovanju evropske digitalne agende ter omogočati razvoj številnih aplikacij za 5G, ki jih bo FSO tehnologija KORUZA podpirala.
